The case of James Bulger
James Patrick Bulger was born on the 16th of March 1990 in Kirkby, England. The crime took place on Friday12th of February 1993 meaning James was 2 at the time of the attack. On this day, James Bulger was out with his mother at the Bootle Strand Shopping Centre. On the late afternoon they went to the butchers and his mother was distracted and took her eyes off of him as she placed her order. In this time where she was doing so, James had disappeared. The police was later called as the security staff failed to locate him. She gave a precise description of him saying he was wearing a blue coat with a hood and mustard lining, silver-coloured tracksuit bottoms and white trainers. Denise, James's mother was distraught as it came up to 5:30pm and the shopping centre closed for the day. The police launched a major search for a missing child in Bootle, Liverpool.
The police and security staff worked through the night at the Shopping Centre to look through CCTV footage This was then rewarded as they managed to pinpoint James after leaving the butcher's shop earlier that day. They managed to track his movements and he was soon on the top floor and appeared to be following 2 boys, one holding his hand as they are seen to be heading towards the exit in the direction of the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
On Sunday 14th of February, James had been missing for 2 days while the police and James's family had been doing everything possible to find him. Searching the nearby canals and wasteland areas where hope for a happy ending is disappeared. A young boy rushes into the police station and announces a body has been found on the railway tracks.
The 2 boys were later recognised as Robert Thompson aged 10 and Jon Venables also aged 10 and were arrested in their homes in Liverpool. This happened on the 18th February 1993.
On the 22nd of February 1993, Robert Thompson and Jon Venables appeared in court and was charged with abduction and murder of James Bulger.
On 24th of November 1993, The trial took place at Preston Crown Court where the jury found Robert and Jon were found guilty of abduction and murder. They were sentenced to a 8 year minimum and released in June 2001.
